As our story begins, researcher Dr. Allison Banks is baffled by her new dolphin, Silver. He is far more intelligent than the other three she already had, and she is at her wits’ end trying to devise challenging activities for him. Silver understands every new challenge she gives him immediately, leaving her feeling a little inadequate and puzzled.
With the help of Rick Salas and Liz Evans, her two graduate students, and her does-everything associate Jay Crenshaw, she sets up an even more difficult challenge for Silver, a complicated underwater keyboard, but he defeats this as well. When she begins having pictures pop into her head, creating dizziness and headaches, she realizes that these must be coming from the strange dolphin.
What is Silver’s secret? One image she receives is of a pattern of stars, which an astronomer friend identifies as the star system Sirius.
This new bit of information sets them all off on an adventure to discover Silver’s true nature, involving a fishing boat and its crew, the help of Allison’s new scuba instructor boyfriend Rob, his diver friends, and a trip to the bottom of the sea.
Silver’s secret turns out to be stranger than she could imagine and will have a profound effect on Allison’s life forever after, changing its direction in ways she could never expect.
